A LENTEN JOURNEY

On Wednesday February 17th, 2010 the Church begins our annual Lenten Journey. The journey begins with the distribution of Ashes to remind us of our mortality and of our need for continued conversion. When the ashes are placed on our foreheads the words: “Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return”, or “Turn away from sin and receive the Gospel.” are said. Both of these statements remind us of the fact that we do not have here on earth a lasting home. Our true home is in heaven and in the meantime we are challenged to form our minds and hearts more closely to God’s plan for our lives. God’s plan invites us to become people of hope, healing and peace to all our sisters and brothers who will pass though our lives: to bring good news to the poor, to bring liberty to captives, to bring sight to the blind, and to proclaim a year of favour before the Lord. We can accomplish this goal by daily striving to enable every person who touches our lives to greater appreciate their dignity as sons and daughters of God and to call forth that great gift of life which is within them. During the Lenten Season we will read in the Scriptures the story of Jesus’ journey to the house of His Father. We will be invited to reflect on the challenges he faced as he taught his disciples and those who would listen to his words. These were by no means easy invitations to embrace, but the promise of eternal life would be the reward for faithfulness. During the Season of Lent we will have the following opportunities to journey with Jesus as we walk with him to the glory of Easter.
